Greenville, MS – A Mound Bayou man has been locked away for over six years after being caught with a firearm as a previously convicted felon. Dennis Coleman, 44, was sentenced today by Chief Judge Debra M. Brown of the U.S. District Court to 74 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
The court documents revealed that Coleman had already pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. His latest brush with the law came to an end as he was remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal following his sentencing.
U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner emphasized the importance of keeping firearms out of criminals’ hands, thanking local law enforcement for their collaborative efforts in making the community safer. “Thanks to the Cleveland Police Department, the Bolivar County S.O. and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, this community is now safer for citizens and families,” said Joyner.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell echoed these sentiments, highlighting the critical role of keeping firearms away from convicted felons. “This sentencing sends a clear message that those who repeatedly break the law and endanger others will be held accountable,” he stated.
This case was a collaborative effort between the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, and the Cleveland Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Mims handling the prosecution.
Part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), this initiative brings together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime and gun violence, making neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department launched a strategic approach to violent crime reduction on May 26, 2021, focusing on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
