Mackee Donell Jefferson, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Mississippi 2018

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In Jackson, Mississippi, Mackee Donell Jefferson, 37, has entered a guilty plea to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The plea was tendered before Senior U.S. District Court Judge Tom S. Lee and announced by U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Special Agent Christopher Freeze of the FBI.

Jefferson’s transgression dates back to September 14, 2018, when he, impatient in line at a fast food restaurant drive-thru, produced a black handgun and tapped on the window, seeking to speed up service. His actions led to Jackson Police Department intervention and his admission of gun possession.

The defendant has a record of prior felony convictions, including auto burglary and auto theft. Currently in custody, Jefferson awaits sentencing by Judge Lee on August 15, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. He faces up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine for his latest offense.

Investigation into this case was conducted by the FBI, with prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorney Bert Carraway. The charges stem from Project EJECT, an initiative under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods program aimed at reducing violent crime through a multi-disciplinary approach.

Project EJECT stands for ‘Empower Justice Expel Crime Together,’ emphasizing partnership between law enforcement and communities to create safer neighborhoods. Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated Project Safe Neighborhoods in 2017, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to develop strategies against violent crime.
