SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – In a chilling turn of events that shocked the nation park system, Dylan J. Hanger, 31, from Mountain View, Mo., was today sentenced to 21 years and 10 months in federal prison without parole for the brutal murder of his estranged wife.
Hanger, who met his wife, Brittany Gorman, at the Buck Hollow Access Area within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways on May 20, 2020, admitted to stabbing her several times during a heated argument. The attack led to Gorman’s tragic death.
According to court documents, Hanger had been meticulously planning his wife’s demise since months before their fatal encounter. After the murder, he misleadingly told both Gorman’s family and law enforcement that she was missing, suggesting her disappearance was linked to drug connections. It took Hanger nine days of deception before finally admitting his guilt and disclosing the location of Gorman’s body on May 30, 2020.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Josephine L. Stockard prosecuted this harrowing case, while investigations were carried out by the Texas County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department, the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Hanger, a father of three children aged 5, 7, and 10, shared his life with Gorman until their acrimonious separation. The crime has left a profound impact on those who knew them.
This grim sentence underscores the severity of the offense and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking within national parks.
