Muskogee Man Found Guilty of Heinous Child Sex Abuse

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Joseph Stanley Harjo, 40, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, has been found guilty of Aggravated Sexual Abuse in Indian Country following a federal jury trial, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced today. The verdict caps a disturbing case involving the sexual exploitation of vulnerable victims.

The trial, which commenced on Monday, November 15, 2021, and concluded Tuesday, November 16, 2021, revealed a pattern of predatory behavior. Prosecutors presented evidence detailing Harjo’s abuse of a six-year-old child in June 2016. The evidence didn’t stop there. Five additional witnesses bravely testified, recounting instances where Harjo sexually assaulted them when they were between the ages of four and twelve.

Harjo now faces a significant prison sentence. The conviction carries a mandatory minimum of 30 years imprisonment, potentially extending to a life sentence behind bars. The gravity of the crimes underscores the severity of the punishment he will likely receive.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Muskogee Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, brought Harjo’s actions to light. Federal prosecutors emphasized that the case fell under federal jurisdiction because both Harjo and the initial victim are members of a federally recognized Indian tribe, and the crimes occurred within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Reservation in Muskogee County, within the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the trial and has ordered a presentence report to be completed. Harjo remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Morgan Muzljakovich and Anthony Marek successfully prosecuted the case, delivering a verdict that offers a measure of justice to the victims.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as sentencing information becomes available. This conviction sends a clear message: the exploitation of children will not be tolerated, and those who commit such heinous acts will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
