St. Petersburg Man Charged with Luring Minor
A shocking case of online exploitation has come to light in St. Petersburg, as 64-year-old Robert Jay Berman has been accused of attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity. The charges, brought forth by the United States Attorney’s Office, carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, up to life in federal prison.
According to court documents, Berman engaged in a series of sexually explicit online chats, via text message, and through email, with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. What he didn’t know was that the person on the other end was an undercover agent. The agent reported that Berman sent an email with a photograph depicting his exposed genitalia, further solidifying the severity of the situation.
On July 31, 2014, after making arrangements to meet the ’14-year-old girl’ at a public location, Berman was arrested. This arrest marks the culmination of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the St. Petersburg Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Joseph W. Swanson set to prosecute the case.
The charges against Berman are just the latest in a string of cases brought forth as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This initiative, led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, seeks to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
While Berman has yet to enter a plea, the severity of the charges against him cannot be overstated. As the investigation continues, it is clear that the safety and well-being of our children must remain a top priority.
The case against Berman serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk online, and the importance of vigilance in protecting our most vulnerable citizens. As we continue to follow this story, one thing is clear: those who would seek to harm our children will be held accountable.
