Mustafaa Slim, Drug & Gun Trafficking, South Bend IN, 2023

SOUTH BEND, IN – Mustafaa Slim, 29, is headed to federal prison for 78 months after admitting to peddling poison and illegally packing heat. U.S. District Court Judge Robert L. Miller, Jr. handed down the sentence Monday, marking the third felony conviction for Slim and his second related to drug dealing.

Slim pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances – specifically a heroin/fentanyl mix – and being a felon in possession of firearms. The ATF, backed by the South Bend Police Department, built the case after Slim twice sold the deadly concoction to an informant in May 2022. It wasn’t just a small-time operation; investigators raided Slim’s residence and uncovered a veritable arsenal: three firearms, more fentanyl and methamphetamine, cocaine, and a staggering $8,000 in cash.

This wasn’t Slim’s first rodeo. His prior convictions already stripped him of the right to own guns, a fact clearly lost on him. Authorities are treating Slim as a repeat offender, and the lengthy sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the danger he posed to the community. The 78-month sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release, but that’s little comfort to those who could have fallen victim to his poison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerome W. McKeever prosecuted the case, highlighting the Department of Justice’s commitment to tackling drug and gun violence. The investigation was spearheaded by the ATF’s Chicago Field Division. While the feds tout their efforts, the reality on the streets of South Bend is that Slim is just one cog in a much larger machine – a machine fueled by desperation and greed.

The case falls under the umbrella of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime. The program’s lofty goals – fostering trust, supporting community groups, and strategic enforcement – sound good on paper, but many question whether it’s truly making a dent in the pervasive violence that plagues cities like South Bend. Critics argue that PSN often focuses on low-level offenders like Slim, while the kingpins continue to operate with impunity.

Regardless of the program’s overall effectiveness, Slim is off the streets, at least for the next six and a half years. But the pipeline of drugs and guns will undoubtedly remain open, waiting for the next hustler to fill the void. The Grimy Times will continue to report on the grim realities of federal crime, exposing the underbelly of American society and holding those responsible accountable.
