Kansas City Man Sentenced for Armed Robbery, Carjacking
A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 14 years and two months in federal prison without parole for an armed robbery and carjacking that occurred during an illegal drug sale.
Mykus Butler, 25, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays on Monday, April 29, for his role in the violent crime.
The incident occurred on March 10, 2020, when Butler contacted the victim of the robbery to arrange a marijuana purchase. However, instead of buying the marijuana, Butler and his associates turned violent.
According to court documents, Butler got into the back seat of the victim’s vehicle and pointed a firearm at him while taking the victim’s marijuana and firearm. Two armed associates of Butler joined the effort by pulling the victim, who was in the driver’s seat, and a front seat passenger out of the car. The victim was pistol whipped as he was pulled from the vehicle.
After a brief confrontation, the victim ran away as one of Butler’s associates pointed and shot a firearm at him and the passenger. Butler and his associates then got into the victim’s car and drove it from the scene.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Q. McCarther. It was investigated by the FBI, the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The sentence handed down to Butler serves as a reminder of the harsh penalties for violent crimes committed in the Kansas City area.
Butler pleaded guilty on August 30, 2023, to aiding and abetting a robbery, aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and aiding and abetting a carjacking.
