BEAUMONT, Texas – In a stunning turn of events, 55-year-old Nacogdoches resident Jonathan McArthur Brewer has pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking and firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas. The admission was made before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christine L. Stetson on August 26, 2025.
Brewer, a convicted felon, entered his plea to being in possession of a firearm while a felon and intent to distribute at least 50 grams of methamphetamine. The charges stem from an incident on June 30, 2024, when local law enforcement responded to a ‘shots fired’ call and observed Brewer fleeing the scene in a vehicle matching the description of a suspect.
A high-speed chase followed, culminating in Brewer’s apprehension. During the search of the vehicle, authorities discovered a firearm and a substantial quantity of methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed that Brewer is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms due to his felony conviction.
Brewer was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15, 2025, and now faces up to life in federal prison at sentencing. The maximum sentence allowed under federal law is provided for informational purposes; the final determination will rest with the court based on advisory guidelines and other statutory factors.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a coordinated nationwide effort led by the Department of Justice. The initiative aims to combat illegal immigration, eliminate cartels, transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect communities from violent crime. It leverages resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
The investigation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald S. Carter.
