HONOLULU – In a chilling verdict, Dwayne Yuen, the 52-year-old Honolulu-based basketball coach, has been sentenced to 405 months’ imprisonment for his heinous acts of child exploitation and harassment. The sentence includes a lifetime term of supervised release, following his guilty plea in December 2024.
Yuen was arrested in February 2023 after charges of child exploitation offenses were filed against him. His criminal activities, which spanned nearly two decades, came to light during the case that led to his arrest. The coach preyed on vulnerable young basketball players, manipulating them through gifts and sexualized imagery, and coercing them into sexual activity.
According to court documents, Yuen targeted students as young as twelve years old, including three minor victims he sexually trafficked or coerced into engaging in sexual acts. He also harassed multiple victims through anonymous and obscene communications over a period of several years.
The judge’s ruling echoed the severity of Yuen’s crimes, describing him as a “predator with a whistle” who groomed and preyed on his young victims over and over again. The sentences handed down reflect the gravity of the repeated violations of trust he committed.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson emphasized the profound impact Yuen’s actions had on his victims, stating that nothing could undo the harm caused. However, he expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent within the community and ensure that such crimes are not tolerated.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who abuse their positions to exploit vulnerable young people.
