Kalihi Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Child Pornography
A 54-year-old man from Kalihi, Hawaii, will spend the next 20 years behind bars for his involvement in a disturbing child pornography case.
Michael K. Kormanik was sentenced to 20 years in prison, followed by supervised release for life, for transporting and possessing child pornography. As part of his federal conviction, Kormanik will be required to register as a sex offender.
The charges against Kormanik stem from a 2019 investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. According to court records, Kormanik’s home computer contained more than 3,000 images and over 400 videos of child pornography. His IP address was also linked to a peer-to-peer file sharing network that was used to distribute child pornography.
Kormanik had previously been convicted of sexual assault of a minor, a 10-year-old boy, whom he repeatedly abused. He also admitted to having sexually abused two other young boys in the past.
During the sentencing proceedings, Senior District Judge Helen Gillmor expressed serious concern over Kormanik’s recent interactions with young boys in his neighborhood. Kormanik had been providing them with marijuana, further raising concerns about his potential threat to the community.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc A. Wallenstein. Kormanik’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting our children from predators like Kormanik.
Kormanik will be required to serve his 20-year sentence, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. The people of Hawaii can rest a little easier knowing that he will no longer be a threat to their children.
