A shocking crime unfolded on an international flight bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Nadeem Mehmood Quraishi, a 43-year-old resident of Staten Island, New York, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for sexually assaulting a woman aboard the flight.
The assault took place on April 21, 2016, after the victim had taken prescription medication and fell asleep. Quraishi admitted to applying the victim’s lotion to her genital area while she was unconscious. Flight attendants confronted him shortly after the assault, and he confessed to the crime.
US Attorney Robert L. Capers stated, “The defendant’s assault of this victim was an outrageous affront to what should have been a safe and peaceful passage on an international flight.” Capers warned that those who commit such crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Diego Rodriguez added, “Being on an airplane for an extended period can be stressful, but it’s unfair to ask passengers to keep their wits about them for more than half a day in the air.” Rodriguez emphasized that crimes aboard aircraft are taken seriously.
Nadeem Mehmood Quraishi’s sentencing took place before US District Judge Carol B. Amon on [Date]. The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Nomi D. Berenson.
