CINCINNATI – Kim Lien Vu, 46, of Liberty Township, Ohio, was sentenced to 46 months in prison for attempting to torch a competing nail salon in Monroe, Ohio.
In September 2023, Vu pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit malicious destruction via fire. Her plot began in December 2022 when she approached her employee about revenge against the rival salon.
Vu and co-defendant Cierra Marie Bishop, 30, of Hamilton, Ohio, planned a remote-controlled incendiary device. Surveillance footage showed Bishop planting the device under a salon desk. The discovery of the explosive led to a fire, and Monroe police were dispatched to extinguish the flames.
Vu was away in Virginia at the time of the incident, maintaining an alibi. She remained in contact with Bishop throughout the planning. The three women faced federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury in February 2023.
United States Attorney Kenneth L. Parker and other law enforcement officials announced the sentence on April 24, imposed by U.S. District Judge Matthew W. McFarland. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy S. Mangan represented the government in the case.
