Abingdon, VIRGINIA – The grim halls of justice were echoed yesterday as Christopher Matthew Marsh, a 40-year-old resident of Wytheville, VA, stood before the court and pleaded guilty to a harrowing offense. This is not merely a case of failure to register; it’s a stark reminder of the consequences when those who have been sentenced for heinous acts do not comply with their legal obligations.
March, a previously convicted sex offender, was found wanting in his adherence to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act [SORNA]. According to Virginia Assistant Attorney General Suzanne Kerney-Quillen, Marsh’s past included a sexual offense conviction in Florida back in 1997. This mandatory registration under SORNA became his cross to bear.
Marsh initially played by the rules, at least partially, until June 2016 when the true extent of his lawlessness came to light. His GPS monitor strap was cut off, a warrant for his arrest was issued, and he was apprehended at a motel in August 2016. A thorough review of Virginia’s Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act revealed Marsh had failed to register as required.
The United States Marshal’s Service took the lead on this investigation, showcasing the relentless pursuit of justice. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney M. Suzanne Kerney-Quillen, a dedicated Virginia Assistant Attorney General assigned to the Attorney General’s Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section.
Marsh’s guilt has been established, but the plea is just the first step in his retribution. As he awaits sentencing, Marsh must confront the full weight of his failure to comply with SORNA and its ramifications on his future.
