Sean Mulkern, Cocaine Trafficking, Maine 2024

A Naples man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in a major drug trafficking operation.

Sean Mulkern, 54, was sentenced on in federal court in Portland, Maine, for drug trafficking and firearm offenses. Mulkern was also ordered to forfeit over $13,000 in drug proceeds.

The investigation into Mulkern’s operation began on May 25, 2017, when Westbrook police officers conducted a traffic stop of Mulkern’s vehicle. During the stop, officers found cocaine, cocaine base, heroin, and a loaded 9 mm pistol close to the drugs.

When investigators executed a search warrant at Mulkern’s Naples residence, they found additional quantities of cocaine base, a digital scale, and four more firearms. The discovery of these weapons, combined with Mulkern’s prior convictions for drug trafficking and burglary, triggered enhanced penalties under the Armed Career Criminal Act.

Mulkern had previously pleaded guilty to the charges on March 14, 2019. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Buxton and Westbrook Police Departments all contributed to the investigation.

The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN brings together federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement officials, prosecutors, community leaders, and other stakeholders to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in a community.
