Noreen Khan, Mortgage Fraud, California 2023

HOUSTON – A massive mortgage fraud scheme has landed a Missouri City couple behind bars. Former NASA technical manager Noreen Khan, 52, and her husband Christopher Mayberry, 53, have admitted to orchestrating a fraudulent financing and refinancing mortgage loan scheme that defrauded lenders out of millions.

The couple, who both worked at NASA during the time of the scam, began their deceit in 2016 by taking out significant personal loans to purchase a luxury home. They quickly defaulted on these loans, later claiming they were victims of identity theft. Noreen Khan furthered her deception by filing a false police report and submitting fraudulent reports to credit bureaus.

The duo signed three separate loan agreements with mortgage lenders between 2017 and 2021, providing false employment information and fake documents such as pay stubs, tax forms, and account statements. Their scheme unraveled when they failed to make the necessary payments on their loans.

Khan and Mayberry face up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 fine for their crimes, along with the potential forfeiture of their luxury home. They are also required to pay restitution totaling $276,709 before sentencing, set for December 18th before U.S. District Judge Charles Eskridge.

The investigation was conducted by NASA’s Office of Inspector General-Office of Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Winter handling the prosecution. Khan and Mayberry have been permitted to remain on bond pending their hearing.
