HOUSTON – A stunning revelation from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Texas has brought to light a fraudulent financing and refinancing mortgage loan scheme masterminded by a former NASA employee and her husband. Noreen Khan, also known as Noreen Khan-Mayberry, 52, and Christopher Mayberry, 53, both of Missouri City, have admitted their roles in the elaborate plot.
The couple, while employed at NASA, dipped into personal loans to secure a luxurious home. But their financial troubles began when they defaulted on these significant loans, beginning in 2016. Their next move was to dispute the debts, claiming identity theft as the culprit. Noreen Khan filed a false police report and sought to remove loans from her credit by submitting false reports to the Federal Trade Commission and sending letters to credit bureaus.
However, their fraudulent activities did not end there. From 2017 to 2021, Khan and Mayberry signed three separate loan agreements with mortgage lenders for their home financing. They provided false employment information and fake documents to the lenders, including pay stubs, tax forms, and account statements.
The couple’s deceitful scheme has led to serious legal consequences. Both face up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 fine. In addition to this, they are required to pay restitution totaling $276,709 before their sentencing on December 18th. The hearing is set before U.S. District Judge Charles Eskridge, and both Khan and Mayberry are currently allowed to remain on bond.
This investigation was conducted by NASA’s Office of Inspector General-Office of Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Winter handling the prosecution.
Stay tuned as this case unfolds, as the nation watches another chapter in the ongoing battle against financial fraud.
