Rapid City, SD – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Nathan David Hankins, a 30-year-old resident of Rapid City, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for receiving and possessing child pornography.

Nathan David Hankins was convicted of Receipt of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography by a federal grand jury in December 2019. He was later convicted at a court trial on March 23, 2023. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down the sentence on August 29, 2023.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce executed a search warrant on Hankins’ residence and located several devices containing hundreds of images of child pornography.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children.

The case was investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case. Nathan David Hankins was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
