Nathan Hunter Whitaker, Fentanyl Distribution, Tennessee 2024

GREENEVILLE, TENN. – Today, 27-year-old Nathan Hunter Whitaker of Bristol, Tennessee, was sentenced to 292 months by the Honorable Clifton L. Corker for distributing fentanyl-laced counterfeit Roxicodone pills that led to a fatal overdose. Following his incarceration, he will be on supervised release for three years.

Whitaker pleaded guilty to distributing N-phenyl-N-[1-(2-phenylethyl)-4-piperidinyl] propanamide (Fentanyl), in violation of federal drug laws, after an investigation into the distribution of cocaine, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine in Tennessee. The probe led to the discovery of a February 2023 overdose death in Sullivan County, Tennessee, attributed to fentanyl toxicity.

On April 1, 2024, Whitaker was located with $13,754 in cash and over 130 firearms, including two stolen from the Tennessee Valley Authority Police. During an interview, Whitaker admitted providing the fatal doses of fentanyl to the victim.

United States Attorney Francis M. Hamilton, III emphasized the prevalence of fentanyl-related deaths and vowed to utilize all resources for investigation and prosecution of such crimes. DEA Special Agent in Charge Jim Scott highlighted the collaboration in bringing Whitaker to justice.

Homeland Security Investigations Nashville Special Agent in Charge Rana Saoud emphasized the agency’s dedication to preventing fentanyl distribution and pursuing those responsible. The investigation was a joint effort by multiple agencies, led by DEA Special Agent Cullen Conerly, HSI Special Agent John Bulla, and TBI Special Agent Thomas Garrison.
