Nathaniel Begay Charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Using a Firearm
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A Navajo man is facing serious charges after a violent incident in Albuquerque.
Nathaniel Begay, 29, was indicted on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. According to the indictment, Begay used two handguns to shoot multiple rounds at three adult individuals and five juveniles with the intent to cause bodily harm.
The incident occurred on April 28, 2022. Begay, who is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, will remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for June 1.
An indictment is only an allegation, and Begay is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
The case was investigated by the FBI Farmington Agency with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and the Farmington Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew J. McGinley is prosecuting the case.
The FBI is working to ensure that those who use firearms to commit violent crimes are held accountable for their actions. The Navajo Nation is also working to address the root causes of violence and provide support to victims and their families.
Nathaniel Begay’s case is a reminder that violence has serious consequences and that those who commit such crimes will be pursued and brought to justice.
