New Orleans – The grim halls of justice echo with the plea of Nevada’s MICHAEL JON SCHOFIELD, 76, who has been caught using art appraisals to cloak his fraudulent activities. Schofield admitted to a crime that is as cunning as it is sinister – he concealed wire fraud by misrepresenting the value of art in an appraisal.
This brazen scheme came to light as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigated the Nevada resident’s actions. The fraudster, now staring down the barrel of serious charges, will face sentencing on August 14, 2024, before U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance.
The misdeed, classified as misprision of a felony, carries with it a heavy penalty: up to three years imprisonment, one year of supervised release, and a fine that could reach $250,000. Schofield’s wallet isn’t the only thing suffering; he must also fork over a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
Chandra Menon, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Public Integrity Unit, is leading the prosecution against this artful conman. The case underscores the lengths some individuals will go to in order to deceive and defraud.
