New Hampshire in 1948: Nation’s Highway Murder Rate Skyrockets

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, which began collecting crime data in 1930, the nation witnessed a disturbing spike in highway-related homicides in 1948. As America’s highway system expanded and automobile ownership became more widespread, so too did the number of violent crimes committed on the nation’s roads.

Nationally, the number of reported murders increased by 5.2% in 1948, with highway-related killings accounting for a disproportionately large share of those fatalities. While the FBI UCR program doesn’t provide exact numbers for New Hampshire, the state’s residents likely felt the impact of this trend firsthand. With the nation’s economy booming and post-war migration on the rise, America’s roads became increasingly congested, creating a fertile ground for crime to flourish.
