New Hampshire’s First Female US Attorney Takes Office

CONCORD – In a historic moment for New Hampshire’s justice system, Emily Gray Rice was sworn in today as the United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire, marking the first time a woman holds the position. U.S. Attorney Rice, nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, is the 56th United States Attorney for the district.

A seasoned trial lawyer with 30 years of experience, U.S. Attorney Rice brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. She began her career at the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, representing the state in state and federal courts and administrative bodies. During her final three years there, she served as a senior assistant attorney general and chief of the bureau of civil law.

After leaving the Attorney General’s Office, U.S. Attorney Rice spent over two decades in private litigation practice, handling both trials and appeals. Immediately prior to becoming U.S. Attorney, she was a shareholder with Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, working in its Manchester, New Hampshire office.

U.S. Attorney Rice has received numerous accolades for her outstanding professionalism, including the E. Donald Dufresne Award from the New Hampshire Bar Association and the Marilla Ricker Achievement Award from the New Hampshire Women’s Bar Association. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the New Hampshire Bar Association.

Before taking office, U.S. Attorney Rice served as co-chair of the New Hampshire Governor’s Judicial Selection Commission and chair of the Leadership Council of the New Hampshire Campaign for Legal Services. She was also a member of the adjunct faculty at the UNH School of Law.

U.S. Attorney Rice is a proud graduate of the Philadelphia public schools and earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Boston University. She also holds a law degree from Northeastern University School of Law.

With her extensive experience and commitment to justice, U.S. Attorney Rice is poised to make a significant impact in New Hampshire’s justice system.
