Luis Angel Pulido, Fentanyl Smuggling, New Mexico 2024

A 22-year-old New Mexico man is facing serious charges after being accused of smuggling a massive amount of fentanyl into Arizona.

Luis Angel Pulido, 22, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, was indicted by a federal grand jury last week on one count of Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl.

The indictment alleges that Pulido knowingly and intentionally possessed with the intent to distribute a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl, a Schedule II controlled substance, on or about April 7, 2024.

Pulido was stopped on Interstate 40, on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation, in Sanders, Arizona, after committing civil traffic violations. During the traffic stop, a drug-sniffing canine alerted on Pulido’s vehicle.

Bureau of Indian Affairs officers searched the vehicle and discovered approximately 47 pounds of fentanyl pills hidden in the trunk.

Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000,000, and up to lifetime supervised release.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is conducting the investigation in this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Genevieve Ozark, District of Arizona, Phoenix, handling the prosecution.

The case number is CR-24-08044-PCT-DWL, and the release number is 2024-061_Pulido.
