A New Mexico man has been indicted for possessing a massive 47 pounds of fentanyl with the intent to distribute, federal authorities announced.
Luis Angel Pulido, 22, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, was stopped on Interstate 40 in Sanders, Arizona, after committing civil traffic violations, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona. During the traffic stop, a drug-sniffing canine alerted on Pulido’s vehicle, and a search revealed the massive stash of fentanyl pills hidden in the trunk.
The indictment alleges that Pulido knowingly and intentionally possessed the fentanyl with the intent to distribute it, making him a major player in the deadly opioid epidemic sweeping the nation.
Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000,000, and up to lifetime supervised release. Pulido’s case is a stark reminder of the severity of the fentanyl crisis and the need for continued vigilance from law enforcement.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is conducting the investigation into Pulido’s case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Genevieve Ozark, District of Arizona, Phoenix, is handling the prosecution.
The case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in combating the opioid epidemic. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, are working together to bring Pulido to justice and hold him accountable for his actions.
Pulido’s indictment is a significant step in the fight against fentanyl trafficking. His case will now proceed to trial, where he will face the consequences of his alleged crimes.
