New Orleans, LOUISIANA – A harrowing federal charge sheet dropped on Gourvon Sears, 26, of New Orleans, who stands accused of a chilling drug trafficking ring and illegal firearm possession.
United States Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Sears was indicted on June 14, 2024, for violating the Federal Controlled Substances and Gun Control Acts. The court unsealed the charges against him on June 26, 2024.
In a brutal twist of justice, Sears faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, tapentadol, and marijuana. Adding to his woes, he’s charged with possessing a firearm during the drug trafficking offense—a charge that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years up to life in prison.
Court documents reveal that on June 6, 2024, Sears is alleged to have possessed a Romarm/Cugir Model Mini Draco semi-automatic pistol and a Norinco Model SKS rifle. These firearms were said to be used to further his drug trafficking enterprise within the Eastern District of Louisiana.
U.S. Attorney Evans emphasized that an indictment is merely an accusation, and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which seeks to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney David Berman overseeing the prosecution.
