ALBANY, NEW YORK – Rodell Patterson, age 52, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was slapped with the maximum 60 months in prison for engaging in the firearms business without a license.
Patterson shipped eight packages containing a total of 10 firearms from Baton Rouge to the Capital Region in 2021 and 2022. Two of those firearms were recovered in June 2022 at the Troy, New York, apartment of a man on parole. Patterson even acknowledged that he knew these transfers were unlawful.
Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes also imposed 3 years of supervised release on Patterson.
Patterson was in extensive conversations with the recipient of the packages about the types of firearms and the amount of payment. His actions led to a massive investigation involving ATF’s Albany Field Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana, and ATF’s Baton Rouge Field Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Reiner prosecuted the case, bringing Patterson to justice for his reckless disregard for firearm regulations.
It’s not over for Patterson yet. He still faces an indictment in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana for possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon. That charge is merely an accusation of which Patterson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted of that charge, Patterson faces up to an additional 15 years in prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York and the ATF are sending a clear message: engaging in the firearms business without a license will not be tolerated. Patterson’s case is a prime example of the consequences one faces when flaunting the law.
