A 32-year-old New Orleans man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of child pornography.
David Morel was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Martin L.C. Feldman, who also ordered him to serve a life term of supervised release and pay $5,000 in restitution to each of his five named victims.
According to court records, Morel was charged in June 2015 after a child exploitation investigation by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office Cyber Crime Unit and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations.
Morel was arrested during a search of his residence, where agents discovered over 2,500 images and videos depicting the sexual victimization of children on his electronic devices.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office Cyber Crime Unit and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations in investigating this matter.
Morel’s prior conviction in 2010 for possession of pornography involving juveniles resulted in a suspended sentence, but his recent conviction has led to a more severe punishment. His case serves as a reminder of the importance of combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.
