New Orleans postal employee Chanel M. Mcginnis, 28, has been charged with embezzling a first-class letter containing $450 in United States currency.
According to court documents, Mcginnis allegedly embezzled the letter on or about February 7, 2011, while working for the United States Postal Service. The letter was addressed to W.B., a resident of Metairie, Louisiana.
U.S. Attorney Dana Boente announced the charge, stating that the bill of information is merely an accusation and that Mcginnis’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Mcginnis faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $250,000, and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment if convicted.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service-Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Loan "Mimi" Nguyen handling the prosecution.
Mcginnis’s alleged actions are a betrayal of the public’s trust in the postal service, and we will continue to work to ensure that those who engage in such crimes are held accountable.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in our public institutions.
We urge anyone with information about this case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
