New Port Richey Man Convicted of Child Exploitation

A 62-year-old New Port Richey man has been found guilty of possessing child pornography and attempting to induce a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity.

Mark Joseph Unrein was arrested in May 2014 after he responded to an online ad posing as a mother who would allow her 12-year-old daughter to have sex with a stranger. Unrein began communicating with the undercover officer, making arrangements to meet to have sex with the ‘child.’

Unrein was subsequently arrested in Inverness, Florida, and a search of his residence revealed a computer containing numerous images of young children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

According to the investigation, Unrein used a cell phone and computer to attempt to induce a person he believed was a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity.

Unrein faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 23, 2015.

This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Amanda C. Kaiser.

It was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
