New York City Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Heroin and Cocaine Trafficking

A 32-year-old New York City resident has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for selling cocaine, crack, and heroin in Lackawanna and Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

According to the investigation, Timothy Smart, a New York City resident, sold the illicit substances between 2012 and September 2013. He was arrested on September 20, 2013, after a controlled buy of crack cocaine at a Lackawanna County motel. A subsequent search of the motel room resulted in the seizure of 84 bags of heroin, crack cocaine, and a digital scale.

Smart pleaded guilty in December 2014 to distributing cocaine, crack, and heroin. The conviction and sentence were the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police into the sale of drugs at motels in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus, Jr. Judge Robert D. Mariani also ordered Smart to be placed on three years of supervised release following his prison sentence.

The investigation into Smart’s operations revealed a significant amount of heroin and cocaine being sold in the region. The arrest and conviction of Smart are a significant blow to the organized crime networks operating in the area.

Smart’s sentence serves as a warning to those involved in the heroin and cocaine trade: law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
