NEWARK, N.J. – Guillermo Carrillo-Iraheta, a 19-year-old from Rockland County, New York, has pleaded guilty in federal court to an armed robbery and subsequent carjacking and kidnapping of a taxi driver in New Jersey, according to Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick.
Carrillo-Iraheta, who was 17 at the time of the crimes, admitted robbing a Hawthorne bar on December 25, 2015, and making off with approximately $200 in cash. He also confessed to carjacking and violently kidnapping a Paterson taxi driver the following morning.
The teen and his accomplices forced the driver into a taxi, inflicted serious bodily harm by striking him with a beer bottle and slicing his throat, then abandoned him on the side of the road in New York. The driver survived but suffered severe injuries.
Carrillo-Iraheta faces life imprisonment for the kidnapping charge, 25 years for carjacking, and up to 20 years for conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act Robbery. Sentencing is scheduled for June 27, 2017.
The defendant was originally charged alongside four others, including Wilbur Jonathan Barahona and Balmore Carrillo-Iraheta. Juan Chiliseo-Vega has already pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.
Acting U.S. Attorney Fitzpatrick praised the FBI, Ridgewood and Hawthorne Police Departments for their work on the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elaine K. Lou represents the government in this matter, with defense counsel Michele Ann Adubato Esq. representing Carrillo-Iraheta.
