Newark Man Charged with Firearms Offenses
A 5-year-old child was left injured after being shot in the leg by a stray bullet on Avon Avenue in Newark on July 4, 2018. According to court documents, the shooter, identified as Jamar Battle, 30, was engaged in a verbal dispute with another person at the time of the incident.
Battle, a convicted felon, fired a handgun, striking the child instead of his intended target. The child required medical treatment for the injuries sustained during the shooting.
Battle was charged by complaint on August 10, 2018, with one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was arrested on August 11, 2018, and made an initial appearance in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor in Newark federal court.
The charge of being a felon in possession of a weapon carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito praised law enforcement officers from the Newark Department of Public Safety, the Department of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office for their investigation into the shooting.
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Robert Frazer and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Naazneen Khan of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Violent Crimes Unit in Newark.
Jamar Battle is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are mere accusations.
