NFL Wiretapping Scandal: 2 Men Caught Recording General Managers’ Conversation

A shocking case of wiretapping has rocked the NFL, with two Massachusetts men being caught recording a private conversation between two of the league’s top general managers.

According to federal authorities, Joshua Barber and Nicholas Kaiser, both 21 of Plymouth, Massachusetts, intercepted a telephone conversation between former Buffalo Bills General Manager Buddy Nix and Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik on May 20, 2013.

The defendants, who were 21 at the time of the incident, allegedly gained access to and recorded the private conversation between the two general managers, and then sold it for $150.00 to a particular outlet. The private, recorded conversation was later made public.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo stated that the defendants intentionally intercepted a wire communication between private parties and made a telephone call without disclosing their identity with the intent to annoy or harass the person at the called number.

The pending charges against Barber and Kaiser were resolved by the defendants entering into pre-trial diversion agreements with the Government. Under the terms of the diversion agreement, Barber and Kaiser must abide by certain terms and conditions for the next 18 months. If the defendants fail to comply with the diversion agreement, the charges could be re-instated by the Government.

The resolution is the culmination of an investigation by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Brian P. Boetig. Those involved in this case supported the diversion disposition agreed to by the Government.

The case has raised questions about the privacy of high-profile individuals and the consequences of invading their private conversations. The NFL has not commented on the matter, but it is clear that the league takes the issue of wiretapping seriously.

The incident serves as a reminder that even in the world of professional sports, individuals are not immune to the law. Barber and Kaiser’s actions may have seemed harmless at the time, but the consequences of their actions have been severe.
