Jonathan Bersani, Cocaine Trafficking, New York 2023

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jonathan Bersani, 32, of Niagara Falls, is staring down a potential 20-year prison sentence after admitting to federal cocaine trafficking charges. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced Bersani’s guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer earlier today, a grim culmination of a high-speed, damage-causing run from the law.

The trouble started April 14, 2023, when law enforcement attempted a routine traffic stop. Routine it was not. Instead of cooperating, Bersani allegedly slammed into a civilian vehicle, shoving it forward ten feet, before ramming the police cruiser behind it. The resulting damage to all three vehicles was significant, but Bersani wasn’t finished. He bolted, first in his car, then on foot after it became disabled.

It wasn’t a clean getaway. Cops quickly apprehended Bersani and, within spitting distance of his escape route, recovered a black bag stuffed with approximately 183 grams of cocaine. A quick search of his person also revealed $3,266 in cold, hard cash – presumably profits from his illicit trade. The feds weren’t done digging, either.

Later that same day, a search warrant was executed at Bersani’s Niagara Falls residence. The raid turned up an additional 27 grams of cocaine, along with the tools of the trade: drug paraphernalia. Assistant U.S. Attorney Louis A. Testani, leading the prosecution, painted a clear picture of a man deeply involved in the distribution of narcotics.

The bust was the result of a coordinated effort by the Niagara County Drug Task Force, spearheaded by Sheriff Michael Filicetti, and the Homeland Security Investigations BEST Team, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Scarpino. These agencies worked together to bring Bersani to justice and dismantle a piece of the drug pipeline flowing through Western New York.

Bersani’s sentencing date has not yet been set. However, with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine hanging over his head, his future looks bleak. This case serves as a stark reminder that moving significant quantities of cocaine won’t just earn you a trip to the courthouse – it could land you in a federal penitentiary for decades. # # # #
