Jeffrey Richards, Bomb Making, New York 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The gritty streets of Niagara Falls are no longer safe for drug kingpins as federal authorities have nailed Jeffrey Richards, 28, with a heaping pile of charges that could land him in the slammer for life.

According to U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., a grand jury has issued a 12-count indictment against Richards, charging him with narcotics conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute various drugs, and maintaining a drug-involved premise. But that’s not all; Richards is also accused of manufacturing controlled substances that posed a significant risk to human life, unlawfully making and possessing an explosive device, firearms possession in furtherance of drug trafficking, and even possession of a stolen firearm.

The feds don’t mince words: the charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, with a maximum term of life imprisonment and a staggering fine of $5 million. It’s clear that if Richards is found guilty, he’ll be looking at a long stretch behind bars.

The case took an ominous turn on December 14, 2018, when law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Richards’ Packard Court residence. They unearthed a treasure trove of illegal substances, including acetyl fentanyl, fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, alprazolam, and over ten firearms, not to mention rounds of ammunition and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

But the kicker was the improvised destructive device they found, along with materials used in its construction. The defendant appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and is currently being held without bail as further proceedings unfold.

This case is a result of a joint investigation by the FBI, ATF, Niagara Falls Police Department, and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department. As always, it must be remembered that a defendant has been charged with a crime but remains innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
