Fentanyl Trafficking Grips Montana: Nicholas Benton Severns Pleads Guilty

GREAT FALLS – In a disturbing case of fentanyl trafficking, Nicholas Benton Severns, a 36-year-old Spokane man, has pleaded guilty to charges of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. This conviction marks a significant blow to the growing fentanyl epidemic in Montana.

According to court documents, the incident unfolded in 2023 when Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services stopped a white Chevy Malibu for speeding. During the traffic stop, officers discovered a piece of foil used for smoking narcotics and arrested both the driver and Severns. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a baggie of meth on the driver and burnt blue fentanyl on Severns.

The search warrant obtained after the canine indicated the presence of drugs led to the discovery of 708 fentanyl pills in a fanny-pack belonging to Severns. During a subsequent interview, Severns admitted to dealing drugs, including fentanyl in Browning. The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, with the DEA and Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services conducting the investigation.

Severns faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 5 years to 40 years, a $5,000,000 fine, and at least 4 years of supervised release. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Sentencing has been set for November 12, 2025.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Severns was released on conditions pending further proceedings. The incident highlights the need for continued efforts to combat the fentanyl epidemic in Montana and ensure public safety.
