Defendant Pleads Guilty to Attempting to Obtain Contraband in Prison

Nickolas William Mihelic, a 39-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sandstone, Minnesota, has pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain contraband in prison, announced United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

According to court documents, on two separate dates in February and March 2022, Mihelic conspired with an unindicted co-conspirator to mail pieces of paper to him at FCI Sandstone that were saturated with liquid methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance.

In order to bypass security protocols, Mihelic’s co-conspirator sent the methamphetamine-saturated papers to him at FCI Sandstone. When the contraband arrived, Bureau of Prisons officials seized the methamphetamine, foiling the plot.

Mihelic pleaded guilty on September 26, 2022, before U.S. District Judge Nancy E. Brasel to two counts of attempting to obtain contraband in prison. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

The case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the FBI. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Hillary A. Taylor is prosecuting the case.

The charges against Mihelic carry significant penalties, and it remains to be seen how the court will proceed. As this case continues to unfold, Grimy Times will provide updates and analysis.
