GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Nicole Bogan, a 39-year-old Tennessee resident, was handed a ten-month prison sentence plus three years of supervised release for her involvement in a $87,355 health care fraud scheme. The judgment was passed down by Judge Clay D. Land on May 30, 2013, in Columbus, Georgia.
Bogan pleaded guilty to charges of health care fraud, violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 1347(a)(2). She admitted to filing numerous fraudulent claim forms with American Family Life Assurance Corporation (AFLAC), falsely claiming cancer-related medical expenses and lost wages during the period from October 12, 2009, to February 9, 2012.
“We are determined to hold fraudsters accountable,” stated U.S. Attorney Michael Moore for the Middle District of Georgia. “Ms. Bogan’s sentence sends a strong message that fraudulent activities in health care will not be tolerated.”
The investigation was spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Crawford Seals. The judge also ordered Bogan to pay $87,355 in restitution to AFLAC and imposed a mandatory assessment fee of $100.
