NJ Man Jailed for Throwing Explosive at Cops
Nicholas Lucia, 27, a Long Beach Township, New Jersey, resident, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for throwing an explosive device at police during the May 30, 2020, Pittsburgh protest.
According to court records, Lucia tossed the explosive device at several uniformed police officers who were trying to maintain control during the chaos.
The device landed on the vest of one officer, but another officer quickly pulled it off, and it exploded before it could cause further harm. The blast left one officer with a concussion.
United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab handed down the sentence against Lucia, who was convicted of obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder.
Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan D. Lusty led the prosecution in this case, representing the government.
United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung praised the joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, saying it was instrumental in bringing Lucia to justice.
Nicholas Lucia’s actions that day put the lives of those officers at risk, and he will have to pay the price for his reckless behavior.
