NEW ORLEANS, LA – Arthur Allen, a resident of Orleans Parish, is facing a lengthy stretch behind bars after receiving a 90-month federal sentence on February 8, 2023. U.S. District Court Judge Jane Triche Milazzo handed down the punishment, along with three years of supervised release and a $300 mandatory special assessment fee, following a four-count indictment.
The case against Allen stemmed from a July 29, 2021 traffic stop conducted by the New Orleans Police Department. Officers initiated a stop on a vehicle carrying Allen and two others. Rather than cooperate, Allen bolted from the vehicle, leading to a brief pursuit before he was apprehended. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a cocktail of illegal drugs and firearms, tying Allen directly to the criminal activity.
According to the indictment, Allen was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (violating Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), (b)(1)(C), and (b)(1)(D)). He also faced charges for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime (Title 18, United States Code, Sections 924(c)(1)(A)(i) and 2), and being a felon in possession of a firearm (Title 18, United States Code, Sections 924(g)(1) and 924(a)(2)). Crucially, Allen was not charged on Count Three of the original indictment, the details of which remain sealed.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that this prosecution is part of the Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. The renewed PSN strategy, launched in May 2021, focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations, prioritizing enforcement, and meticulously tracking results.
The successful prosecution was a coordinated effort involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Louisiana State Police, and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Inga Petrovich, of the Violent Crime Unit within the U.S. Attorney’s Office, spearheaded the case, presenting the evidence that led to Allen’s conviction and substantial sentence.
Allen’s 90-month sentence sends a clear message: trafficking drugs and illegally carrying firearms in New Orleans will be met with the full force of federal law. While Allen prepares to serve his time, the streets of Orleans Parish are, at least temporarily, a little bit safer. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on further developments within the federal justice system.
