A Norwalk man is facing a long stretch behind bars after pleading guilty to a fentanyl trafficking offense in Bridgeport federal court.
JOSE DE JESUS VEGA-CERVANTES, 45, a citizen of Mexico last residing in Norwalk, was arrested on August 22, 2023, after he attempted to sell a kilogram of fentanyl to an individual working with law enforcement.
According to court documents and statements made in court, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Norwalk Police Department made controlled purchases of fentanyl from Vega-Cervantes in July and August 2023.
Vega-Cervantes pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl, an offense that carries a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years.
The defendant has been detained since his arrest and a sentencing date has not been scheduled. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren C. Clark.
The investigation into this matter was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Norwalk Police Department.
Vega-Cervantes’ guilty plea underscores the severity of the opioid crisis plaguing our nation and the efforts of law enforcement to combat it.
As a federal crime journalist, I can attest that the war on drugs is far from over and our communities need continued support from lawmakers and law enforcement to keep our streets safe.
