JACKSON, MS — The grim specter of illegal immigration was once again brought into stark relief on August 6, 2025, when Johny Antonio Nunez-Meza, a 45-year-old Honduran national, received a 5-month and 23-day sentence for unlawful reentry into the United States. The defendant’s transgression began with an arrest in Hinds County on February 2, 2025, where he was nabbed for burglary. Nunez-Meza had been removed from the country on multiple occasions, most notably in August 2012 when he was convicted of illegal entry.
The court documents paint a picture of Nunez-Meza’s repeated attempts to defy U.S. immigration laws. After his latest arrest, a federal grand jury indicted him in February 2025, and he pleaded guilty on May 2, 2025. His sentence ensures that he will soon be back in ICE custody, once released from prison.
U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi, along with Eric P. DeLaune of Homeland Security Investigations and Brian Acuna of ICE/ERO, announced the sentence, underscoring the commitment to uphold immigration laws. Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Brett Grantham handled the prosecution of this case.
This case is a testament to Operation Take Back America’s relentless pursuit of illegal immigration, organized crime, and violent criminals. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Justice, leverages resources from various task forces and projects, including OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood, to protect communities and ensure justice.
As Nunez-Meza serves his sentence, the nation continues its battle against illegal immigration and its associated crimes. The grimy truth is that for some, the cost of defying U.S. borders is a hard-fought prison term.
