Letitia James Fights Conversion Therapy Ban, New York NY, 2023

New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined the ranks of 20 other attorneys general, leading an historic coalition to fight against conversion therapy. In a bold move, they are urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit to uphold Michigan’s ban on this harmful practice.

Conversion therapy, which seeks to alter an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, has been widely discredited and shown to increase risks of suicide and depression among LGBTQ+ youth. The coalition argues that such practices not only fail to meet professional medical standards but also put the community at risk.

‘No one should ever be subject to the harmful practice of conversion therapy,’ stated Attorney General James. ‘States must stand firm in defending their rights and dignity, especially when the LGBTQ+ community faces federal attacks.’

Attorneys general emphasize that over 25 states have restrictions on conversion therapy, including New York, which bans the practice for minors. The coalition asserts that striking down these bans would undermine states’ authority to regulate professional practices.

Michigan’s ban on licensed mental health practitioners from practicing conversion therapy began in 2023. A 2020 study found that LGBTQ+ youth subjected to conversion therapy were three times more likely to attempt suicide than other minors.

Attorney General James and her colleagues are fighting tirelessly to protect the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ youth, ensuring they are not subject to dangerous and ineffective practices like conversion therapy.
