New York – The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under Attorney General Letitia James has released its report on the tragic death of Nathan Scott, who lost his life following an encounter with NYPD officers in Brooklyn last year. On March 24, 2025, OSI concluded that a prosecutor could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt at trial that the officers’ actions were unjustified.
The incident unfolded on March 18, 2024, when Nathan Scott was robbed and chased down East 56th Street by two individuals. The chase led to a ShotSpotter alert and multiple emergency calls reporting gunshots fired on the street. NYPD officers responded and saw Mr. Scott fitting the shooter’s description running with a firearm in his hand. Firing their weapons, the officers asked him to drop the weapon. Mr. Scott was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries later.
Under New York law, police officers are permitted to use deadly force when they reasonably believe it is necessary to defend against the use of deadly force by another person. The OSI determined that given the circumstances and the evidence, a prosecutor could not disprove beyond a reasonable doubt at trial that the officers’ use of deadly force was not justified.
Attorney General James emphasized that while the report clears the officers involved, it does not diminish the pain and loss felt by Mr. Scott’s family. OSI called for ongoing dialogue between law enforcement and the community to address public safety concerns and improve relations.
The incident has sparked further debate about police use of force and the need for transparency in such cases. Activists and civil rights groups have demanded a thorough review of the procedures followed by law enforcement in similar situations, calling for changes to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.
