Oakland Gunrunner Davis Gets 10 Years
OAKLAND – Robert Earl Davis is headed to federal prison for a decade, convicted of turning a profit from illegal guns. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín sentenced Davis to 120 months for dealing firearms without a license and illegally possessing firearms and ammunition as a felon. The sentence comes after a week-long trial in February 2025 where a jury found Davis guilty on two counts, but acquitted him on a third.
The feds say Davis, between August 2020 and December 2021, was running a regular shuttle between Texas and California, buying firearms in the Lone Star State and shipping them to the East Bay. He wasn’t selling to collectors, either. Davis allegedly used social media and mobile communications to advertise and sell these guns for a quick buck – dozens of them, most of which skirted California’s strict gun laws.
The jig was up in December 2022 when a federal task force raided Davis’s home and vehicle. They didn’t find a polite collection; they found a firearm stashed in a hole in the wall and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in various calibers. The evidence clearly painted a picture of a man actively involved in putting more guns on the street, despite his criminal history.
United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Acting Special Agent in Charge Robert Topper announced the sentencing, a clear signal that federal authorities are cracking down on interstate gun trafficking. This wasn’t a one-off mistake; it was a sustained operation driven by profit.
Judge Martínez-Olguín didn’t just hand down the prison sentence. Davis will also serve a three-year period of supervised release after his time inside and is ordered to pay a $200 special assessment. He was immediately taken into custody following the sentencing hearing.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Evan Mateer and Jonah Ross, with the help of Kevin Costello, Mark DiCenzo, and Amala James, secured the conviction. The investigation was a joint effort between the ATF, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fort Worth (TX) Police Department, proving that crossing state lines won’t shield you from the long arm of the law when it comes to illegal firearms.
