Octavius Johnson, Meth & Cocaine Trafficking, Martinsville VA, 2023
ABINGDON, VA – A Martinsville man is facing serious time after a federal jury found him guilty last week of trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine. Octavius Myron Johnson, 39, was convicted on two counts: possessing with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture containing methamphetamine, and possessing with intent to distribute cocaine. The bust represents a significant blow to drug distribution in the Glade Spring area of Washington County.
Federal investigators launched an operation earlier this year focusing on Johnson’s alleged drug dealing. The investigation culminated in a raid of his Martinsville residence, where authorities seized a substantial haul: 9.7 ounces of crystal ice methamphetamine and 83.5 grams of cocaine. The combined street value of the drugs exceeds $35,000, painting a picture of a well-established operation. Alongside the narcotics, law enforcement also recovered $3,800 in cash and other paraphernalia associated with drug trafficking.
The evidence presented in the three-day trial clearly demonstrated Johnson’s intent to distribute the controlled substances. While details of the specific evidence remain sealed, sources within the investigation indicate surveillance and potential informant testimony played a key role in securing the conviction. The DEA, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Holston River Regional Drug Task Force worked in concert to build the case against Johnson, with assistance from multiple agencies including the ATF, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Martinsville Police Department, Smyth County Sheriff’s Office, and Virginia State Police.
“This conviction sends a clear message that we will relentlessly pursue those who poison our communities with dangerous drugs,” stated U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh in a press statement. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and Jared Forget, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Washington Division, joined in the announcement, highlighting the collaborative effort in tackling the drug trade. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney M. Suzanne Kerney-Quillen and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly McGann.
Johnson is scheduled to appear before the court on January 17, 2023, for sentencing. He faces a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison. The maximum penalty for his crimes is a staggering 40 years imprisonment, along with a potential fine of up to $5 million. The length of his sentence will depend on several factors, including his prior criminal history and the judge’s discretion.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing hearing. This conviction underscores the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in Southwest Virginia and the dedication of federal and local agencies to dismantling these criminal networks. The investigation remains open, and authorities are exploring potential links to other drug operations in the region.
