O’Fallon Bank Robber in Custody
The First National Bank of Waterloo in O'Fallon, Illinois, was robbed on September 6th.
Daryl A. Smith, 48, a Cahokia, Illinois, resident, is accused of carrying out the heist. Smith was arrested at a friend's home on Tuesday based on a federal complaint and arrest warrant issued on September 11.
A federal grand jury in East St. Louis, Illinois, returned a one-count indictment charging Smith with the bank robbery. If convicted, Smith faces a maximum term of 20 years imprisonment.
An indictment is a formal charge against a defendant. Under the law, that charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Smith made his initial appearance at the federal courthouse in East St. Louis this morning and pleaded not guilty. He was ordered detained until trial, which is currently set to begin on November 5.
The investigation was conducted by the O'Fallon Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Steven D. Weinhoeft, announced the news today.
