PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Alexander Waterland, 25, a Loveland, Ohio resident, has been locked up for his role in an internet extortion scheme that targeted the University of Pittsburgh. United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today that Waterland was sentenced to one year plus one day imprisonment followed by two years supervised release.
Waterland, alongside co-conspirator Brett Hudson, accessed sensitive data from Pitt’s server and threatened to release it unless the university made changes to their webpage domain. The duo used a YouTube account named AnonOperative13 to spread fear, claiming to be part of the hacking group Anonymous.
The plot unfolded on April 25-28, 2012, when Waterland downloaded data from Pitt’s server with Hudson’s assistance. They then posted a video threat on YouTube and sent an email to the university’s webmaster with a link to the video. Brett Hudson also used Twitter to promote their cause.
In addition to the cyber threats, the conspirators mentioned bomb threats that had been made against the University of Pittsburgh earlier in the year. Their demands were met with swift action by law enforcement, leading to Waterland’s conviction for conspiracy to commit internet extortion.
United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti imposed the sentence on Waterland, ensuring justice is served for the crime he committed against one of our nation’s prestigious educational institutions.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by cybercriminals and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive information. The sentencing of Alexander Waterland shows that law enforcement will not tolerate such threats, and those responsible will be held accountable.
