Wayne Robert Rummel, Bankruptcy Fraud, West Virginia 2023

Huntington, W.Va. – Wayne Robert Rummel, 40, a resident of Crown City, Ohio, has pleaded guilty to falsifying bankruptcy records in a fraudulent bid to secure financing for a car purchase.

On July 5, 2023, Rummel filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, yet despite the case’s pending status, he sought a loan to buy a 2022 Nissan Altima valued at $24,758.50. He was well aware that such a transaction required Bankruptcy Court approval or consent from the United States Trustee.

But Rummel didn’t let legal hurdles stop him. On February 26, 2025, he sent the lender a fraudulent order purporting to be from the Bankruptcy Court, granting approval for the loan. The truth? He had concocted the document himself.

Rummel admitted his deceitful actions during his guilty plea and now faces stiff penalties. Sentencing is set for January 5, 2026, where he could receive up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine reaching $250,000.

Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston announced the charges, praising the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Trustee’s Charleston field office for their roles in the investigation.

The hearing was presided over by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers, with Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan T. Storage handling the prosecution.
