GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Joyce L. Humes, a 62-year-old resident of Dennison, Ohio, is facing serious charges after being indicted for the theft of government funds, specifically Social Security survivor benefits totaling $50,618.
The grand jury’s one-count indictment alleges that Humes, between December 1, 2009, and October 31, 2013, dishonestly obtained these benefits to which she was not entitled. United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, has announced this stunning case.
In addition to the significant monetary loss, Humes now faces the possibility of a substantial sentence if convicted. The exact sentence will be determined by the Court after considering unique factors such as her prior criminal record, her role in the offense, and the nature of the violation. However, any sentence handed down will not exceed the statutory maximum, and it is expected to fall well below that.
This case has been prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. McDonough, who has been working closely with agents from the Office of Inspector General of the United States Social Security Administration in their investigation.
It’s important to note that an indictment is merely a charge and does not constitute evidence of guilt. Humes will be entitled to a fair trial where the burden falls on the government to prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case serves as another stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to in order to defraud the government, highlighting the need for vigilant oversight and enforcement of Social Security programs.
